Job Summary

Accepts and processes legal documents, including subpoenas, summons and complaints, claims for damage, and wage garnishments, served upon Metro and its employees.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accepts and processes subpoenas, summonses, claims for damage and wage garnishments served upon Metro
  • Appears in court to testify and present records
  • Confers with legal counsel and insurance administrators regarding legal availability, source, and confidentiality of information being requested
  • Interacts with staff from various departments and consultants to identify sources and coordinate retrieval and release of information and documents
  • Coordinates reproduction of documents being provided; determines charges and receives payments for costs of reproduction and/or labor; maintains records of charges
  • Maintains records of information requested and information released
  • Provides written and verbal explanations to attorneys regarding release and/or denial of release of information
  • Confers with requestors to clarify information being requested
  • Researches various sources, including but not limited to computerized data bases, personnel files, and accident/incident files
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)

  • Laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures for processing and complying with legal documents
  • Various legal documents served to the agency and their handling, including garnishments, summons and complaints, depositions, workers' compensation, and criminal and witness subpoenas
  • Theories, principles, and practices of disclosure of confidential information
  • Applicable business software applications


Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)

  • Exercising judgment and creativity in making conclusions
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Analyzing complex information
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing

  • Devise recordkeeping and document tracking system
  • Ascertain and maintain confidential information
  • Prioritize work to meet various deadlines, including court dates
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Prepare reports and correspondence
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field 


Experience

  • None Required; experience working with legal documents and personnel information preferred


Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
