Job Summary

Provides on-going paraprofessional computer programming support on numerous software applications in the preparation, compilation, and reporting of scheduling Transit Operations data; provides information to users and upper management by collecting, analyzing, and transforming data from various system sources and uploading to database tables; and troubleshoots and provides solutions to address issues as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains and modifies departmental computer software systems
  • Designs, develops, and maintains several web applications using Visual Basic .NET (VB.NET) programming language
  • Writes, debugs, and optimizes complex SQL (Structured Query Language) and stored procedures in SQL Server Management Studio software
  • Designs and programs departmental utility programs, macros, data queries and reports
  • Serves as backup support for the GIRO′s HASTUS scheduling module
  • Compiles and analyzes transit surveillance data for use in developing and updating departmental automated reports regarding Transit Operations
  • Provides on-going support on data extractions and loading processes
  • Prepares departmental computer systems documentation and reports, including charts, flowcharts, diagrams, and code comments
  • Coordinates with and assists Information Technology Systems department staff in developing and modifying client/server and personal computer programs for departmental use
  • Works with the infrastructure teams to upgrade SQL server
  • Identifies, documents, and corrects performance problems in data files or other data sources
  • Evaluates data management procedures and recommends system improvements
  • Trains department personnel in use of client/server, network, and personal computer hardware and software applications
  • Serves as technical resource and assists team members and users with questions and problem solving related to client/server, personal computer systems, and software applications
  • Generates automated reports using client/server and personal computers
  • Conducts special studies/research projects as assigned

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)

  • Theories, principles, and practices of personal computer business software applications, such as spreadsheet and database applications
  • Computer programming languages, such as Java, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, and SQL
  • Data processing terminology and acronyms
  • Graphic user interface standards
  • Data communications
  • Database management systems and database objects, such as stored procedure, view and tables
  • Client/server enterprise network
  • Applicable business software applications


Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)

  • Performing basic programming in windows application languages and application macros
  • Designing data queries and user-oriented reports
  • Organizing and maintaining data files and process records in a business application area
  • Analyzing situations and identifying problems
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Preparing reports and correspondence
  • Preparing user and systems documentation to industry standards
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Using various input devices for extracting and utilizing data
  • Operating personal computers, general office equipment, and data processing applications

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Business, or a related field


Experience

  • One year of relevant experience programming and developing reports using windows application programming languages, database management, and spreadsheet software 


Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

  • May work overtime as required
