Job Summary

Under moderate supervision, collects transit surveillance data for use in designing and modifying vehicle schedules, trips, and runs, and in analyzing quality and effectiveness of transit services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Rides buses or trains to conduct riding checks of assigned vehicle runs to collect transit surveillance data, including the number of patrons boarding and alighting at each stop, the method of fare payment for each patron, and the arrival/departure of the vehicle at stops
  • Stands at assigned locations along vehicle′s route to collect transit surveillance data
  • Conducts fare surveys to collect data on the fare or fare combination payment of each patron
  • Conducts checks of revenue and non-revenue service vehicles to determine pull-outs, pull-ins, off-route, and other travel movements
  • Conducts rider surveys, either aboard a vehicle or at vehicle stop, to ascertain patrons′ origin/destination, reaction to potential service changes, and personal information
  • Documents data collected by entering into a portable hand-held computer, recording on forms or logs, or using a bar code scanner
  • Documents information regarding traffic conditions, passenger loading, vehicle condition, Operator conduct, missed/canceled trips, service interruptions (i.e., accidents, construction, and emergencies), and other information relevant to the type of check being performed
  • Checks and analyzes collected data for accuracy
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Data collection methods
  • Metro bus/train routes, stops, and running times
  • Areas served by Metro lines and bus routes
  • Operating rules and regulations, including revenue vehicle number series, seating capacities, color schemes, vehicle number, run number, and headsign locations
  • Direction and time concepts
  • Schedule checking computer systems and equipment
  • English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Applicable hardware and business software applications

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)

  • Accurately and clearly collecting and recording data

  • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:


  • None required


  • Two years of relevant experience in transit operations as a Metro Full-time Bus or Train Operator (part-time experience will be counted as half)

Certification/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Must provide own transportation to travel to work locations throughout Metro′s service area
  • Must maintain a land line phone at home
  • Must be able to work various hours within a 24-hour period and various days within a 7-day week
